Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Laser treatments use a single wavelength of light, so most of them target specific concerns. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths to target red and brown pigmentation issues while providing anti-aging and skin-brightening effects.

At JK MedSpa, we want to ensure we offer the most effective treatment options. We offer the Lumecca and LimeLight IPL systems, and your expert provider can help select the best one for your needs.

Learn More About Intense Pulsed Light

The human skin contains many cells that can produce red or brown pigments, leading to discoloration or hyperpigmentation. Signs of aging, such as sun damage, can also affect appearance. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a powerful clarifying skin rejuvenation treatment that targets pigmented cells in your skin to address these concerns.

We often recommend IPL for those who wish to achieve clearer, more even-toned skin with a healthy glow. Patients who are bothered by issues like freckles, spider veins, or age spots often benefit from IPL while enjoying minimal downtime and other benefits. We may recommend this treatment for you if you have a number of pigmentation issues, with or without mild to moderate signs of aging.

Treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Many people report that the pulses of light feel like a rubber band being snapped on the skin.

During treatment, some wavelengths of light target melanin, the brown pigment that causes dark spots and freckles. Others target red pigments contained in your skin or inside spider veins and vascular lesions. These pigments absorb the light wavelengths as heat, causing the pigment particles to break down.

To achieve your goals, you will generally need a series of IPL treatments. The exact number depends on factors, including the severity of your concerns and your skin’s response to treatment. Treatments are usually spaced a few weeks apart.

Many people notice that their dark spots get darker and more noticeable for a short time before their skin eliminates them. You will usually see a noticeable fading of redness within a few weeks, and more severe dark spots may take several months to fade entirely.

IPL results can last for months, and many people schedule treatment every six months to maintain their results. We’ll work with you to find a schedule that fits your lifestyle and lets you keep the brighter, clearer skin you love!

After IPL, the treatment area may look red or flushed for up to a day, and your skin may feel sensitive or swollen. Many people compare the effects to sunburn, and a cool, wet cloth or cold pack can help it return to normal more quickly. If you feel comfortable, you can return to your usual activities immediately after treatment or may take a day of social downtime.

IPL treatment makes your skin very sensitive to UV damage, so wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive exposure to sunlight is an important part of the healing process. In addition, avoiding sun exposure between treatment sessions will help protect you from side effects.
