Frequently Asked Questions About IPL
Intense pulsed light (IPL) uses multiple wavelengths of light to gently penetrate your skin’s surface. These wavelengths of broad-spectrum energy turn into heat once they reach your skin.
This concentrated heat breaks down damaged cells so your body can remove them. IPL also stimulates collagen production, so your skin can replace old cells with stronger, healthier ones.
Before your appointment, avoid using products with active ingredients like retinol, tretinoin, and vitamin C for 7 days. You should also refrain from waxing, tweezing, and abrasive treatments like chemical peels, which can irritate your skin. To reduce the risk of bruising, do not use NSAIDs, blood thinners, or consume alcohol. On the day of your treatment, remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and arrive with a clean face.
After your IPL treatment, your skin may appear slightly red and swollen—similar to a mild sunburn. These side effects should resolve within a few days. Avoid applying makeup and other products to your skin for the first 24 hours, and refrain from intense heat.
Within the next 2 weeks, you may notice some spots darken before they fade or flake off. Do not pick at or exfoliate your skin. Allow it to complete its natural process. Limit your sun exposure during this time and apply SPF daily, as your skin will be more sensitive during this phase.
Absolutely! At JK Med Spa, we recognize that your skin is just as unique as you are, so there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. We’ll help you decide on and schedule complimentary treatments to take your results from IPL even further. For example, we may suggest combining IPL with Morpheus8 microneedling for added skin tightening or PRP to streamline healing and support collagen production.
Most clients achieve the best results after completing a series of 3 to 5 IPL treatments, each spaced about 4 weeks apart. Our physician-led team helps you strategically schedule your treatments to give your skin time to heal and respond before your next visit.
At JK Med Spa, we take an individualized approach to skin rejuvenation. Depending on your skin condition, goals, and progress, your timeline may look different. While some concerns, such as redness and brown spots, may clear up sooner, deeper-rooted concerns, such as fine lines, require more consistent treatment.
